Highlander D

Pitcher

Pitcher will charge but always gives way to the Shortstop or 2nd if they are calling for the ball. She must clear a throwing lane for the throw to first. The only time she will field the ball is if it is slapped to her directly.

Catcher

Catcher must take her position covering home.

First Base

Normal defensive. Field balls hit to her and cover 1st base. She is always stretched out towards the throw.

Second Base

2nd base must position herself forward as well before the pitch. She has priority over the pitcher when going for the ball. A quick-turn and accurate throw is required if she is making the play since a slap hitter already has a 2 or 3 step lead on the play.

Shortstop

Best case, Shortstop fields the ball since she is likely your best ground ball handler.

Shortstop position herself very close to home before the pitch. She has priority over the pitcher and 2nd since her momentum will always be going toward 1st. She must call for the ball quickly to avoid confusion or a collision.

Third Base

She will shift slightly toward short to guard against a bloop or a ball that gets past the shortstop. If the play is not to her, she will retreat to cover her base.

Left Field

Left fielder will creep in a little since a slap hitter will not be hitting the ball deep. She is protecting against a hard slap that may go over the head of 3rd. If the play is not coming to her, she will run to backup 3rd base.

Center Field

Center fielder will creep toward the shortstop side of second base slightly. She is guarding against a short flyball since the shortstop has vacated her position. Once she determines the play is not to her, she must cover second base.

Right Field

Right fielder will creep in to protect against a bloop to second. She will need to hold her position slightly since most slap hitters are left handed. Her key to move is seeing the hitter deep in the batters box. A slapper will run at the pitch so if she see these things, she needs to be on the move quickly. Once she sees that she is not in the play, she must quickly take a backup position to guard against an overthrow to first base. Even if she does not get there in time, her momentum will get her to the ball faster than 1st.
